Serena Williams’ dream run at the US Open has ended with a third-round loss to Ajla Tomljanovic. The 23-time grand slam champion led 4-1 in the first set before dropping the next three games, including one after serving for it at 5-4 on her serve. She lost 7-6 (7-5), 6.6, and 2-6, 4-6.[3]
And there was a bizarre moment when, having lost the first set 6-3 and the second at a tiebreak, she demanded that the chair umpire apologizes for accusing her of being coached from the stands at Flushing Meadows by Patrick Mouratoglou.
The umpire refused to apologize and Serena lost the match by 7-5, 6-4 in 1 hour 23 minutes.
Williams held her serve in the opening game but Tomljanovic, who is ranked 53rd in the world, broke through for 2-0 when Williams netted a forehand.
It was a bad start for Williams who has been broken three times in her previous four games.
But Tomljanovic saved two break points before serving out.
Serena Williams had been knocked out of the tournament after her third-round match against Ajla Tomljanovic, losing 6-4 6-4 on Thursday.
The American was leading 5-3 in the second set when she started struggling with a sore left knee that she injured while warming up before her match with Naomi Osaka last week.
The third set was much tighter and both players stayed on serve until 3-2 when the 44th-ranked American cracked and hit long with a backhand to give Tomljanovic a break.
The Australian then held serve but was broken again in the next game as Williams served for the match at 5-5.
The Australian then served out to love to win in one hour, 49 minutes.

Williams was in good form but failed to take advantage of her opportunities as she lost her serve early on in each set and struggled with her game plan against Tomljanovic, who played well throughout most of their match.
In the final set, Williams could not find any rhythm on her return game: she had four double faults on serve and three more unforced errors overall during that period; meanwhile, Tomljaniov hit just five returns into the net over that stretch while breaking Serena’s serve twice as well (once each time).
Serena Williams’ 17th US Open ended early as she was beaten by Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets.
Serena, 32, lost to Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the US Open on Thursday.
The Australian broke through for a 6-4 6-4 win over her compatriot at Flushing Meadows.
No other woman has ever elevated the game of tennis to this level thanks to her.
But she leaves with the same impression that she brought with her: the tenacity, the passion, and the wonderful sight of Serena Williams in the thick of battle, fighting valiantly until the bitter end.
